A stroke is known as a group of neurological symptoms caused by sudden stopping of blood flow to the brain. It occurs when a large artery that supplies blood to the brain, or a small intracerebral artery, becomes closed, narrowed or ruptured, and stops delivering oxygen and nutrients to a specific area of the brain.

Stroke – types and causes

Ischemic stroke is one of the most common forms of stroke. It is estimated to occur in 70 to 80% of all cases. The main causes of ischemic stroke include:

  1. arterial clot,
  2. damage to small arterioles,
  3. stroke as a result of an embolism originating in the heart.

Stroke – main and warning symptoms

In some cases, warning symptoms appear before the neurological symptoms of a stroke develop. This is called a small stroke, also known as a transient ischemic attack (TIA). Symptoms of a minor stroke usually last 15-60 minutes, at most 24 hours, and disappear completely on their own.

Can a stroke be prevented?

The best ways to prevent stroke are to eat a healthy, balanced diet, exercise regularly, and avoid smoking and drinking too much alcohol.

Udar mózgu – leczenie

The proper functioning of human nerve cells depends, among others, on from regular access to oxygen – they die just a few minutes after its interruption. That is why it is impossible to recreate them. Treatment of a stroke is therefore based on ensuring the best possible conditions for cerebral circulation close to the necrotic area. Acetylsalicylic acid is used to treat stroke and its consequences.

It is important to remember about the care and rehabilitation of patients who have suffered a stroke. It is important to avoid pressure ulcers and pneumonia, which can be prevented through frequent repositioning, patting the chest and breathing gymnastics. Rehabilitation of left hemispheric stroke patients should also include speech. Appropriate exercises with a speech therapist prepared for this will allow for a much faster and more complete return of the ability to communicate through speech.
